Snowshoeing Trails in Bayfield, Wisconsin

Snowshoeing is one of our favorite ways to take in the sights and sounds of nature in Bayfield. Several of the trails are only a few blocks away from Old Rittenhouse Inn, so you can easily access your winter adventure. If you don’t have snowshoes, you can rent equipment from Howl Adventure Center

The Brownstone Trail

You can pick up the Brownstone Trail two blocks away from the inn on 3rd Street. Brownstone is a beautiful three-mile trail that follows the shoreline of Lake Superior with views of brownstone cliffs and Madeline Island.

Big Ravine Preserve

Access the snowshoeing trails at Big Ravine Preserve by parking your car at the baseball field near Bayfield School. The trails at the Big Ravine will take you past snow-covered hardwood forests and scenic overlooks of the lake. This trail is also excellent to spot local wildlife like birds, deer, fox, and snowshoe hares.

Mt Ashwabay

Mt. Ashwabay is the most popular spot for visitors to experience winter adventures in Bayfield. Besides skiing and snowboarding, the mountain is home to nordic skiing and snowshoeing trails. The Sugar Bush Dog Trail is designated for snowshoers, but you may explore all of the cross-country trails here when they are not being groomed.

Houghton Falls Trail

Make the short drive to the Houghton Falls Nature Preserve for some of the most scenic snowshoeing in Wisconsin. Experience the dramatic sandstone cliffs and forested path until you reach the frozen waterfalls. You can also take in views of Lake Superior and read about the historical significance of this preserve along the way.
