The cold of Wisconsin winters keeps many of us inside to hibernate for the season. But don’t hunker down for the season just yet; there are fun ways to embrace winter, such as snowshoeing in Wisconsin. Snowshoeing allows you to get outside and appreciate the beauty of snow-covered trees and frozen landscapes. Bayfield is the perfect place to hit the trails and embrace the cold. Stay with us at Old Rittenhouse Inn and warm up in front of a cozy fireplace after a day of exploration.
Snowshoeing Trails in Bayfield, Wisconsin
Snowshoeing is one of our favorite ways to take in the sights and sounds of nature in Bayfield. Several of the trails are only a few blocks away from Old Rittenhouse Inn, so you can easily access your winter adventure. If you don’t have snowshoes, you can rent equipment from Howl Adventure Center.
The Brownstone Trail
You can pick up the Brownstone Trail two blocks away from the inn on 3rd Street. Brownstone is a beautiful three-mile trail that follows the shoreline of Lake Superior with views of brownstone cliffs and Madeline Island.
Big Ravine Preserve
Access the snowshoeing trails at Big Ravine Preserve by parking your car at the baseball field near Bayfield School. The trails at the Big Ravine will take you past snow-covered hardwood forests and scenic overlooks of the lake. This trail is also excellent to spot local wildlife like birds, deer, fox, and snowshoe hares.
Mt. Ashwabay is the most popular spot for visitors to experience winter adventures in Bayfield. Besides skiing and snowboarding, the mountain is home to nordic skiing and snowshoeing trails. The Sugar Bush Dog Trail is designated for snowshoers, but you may explore all of the cross-country trails here when they are not being groomed.
Houghton Falls Trail
Make the short drive to the Houghton Falls Nature Preserve for some of the most scenic snowshoeing in Wisconsin. Experience the dramatic sandstone cliffs and forested path until you reach the frozen waterfalls. You can also take in views of Lake Superior and read about the historical significance of this preserve along the way.
