Wassail! This old English word was a greeting: a toast wishing good health and prosperity during the holidays. “Wassailers” went from door to door during the Christmas season, singing carols and making merry. They often drank a strong spiced ale, carried in a Wassail Bowl.
This December, Wassail Dinner Concert guests can try the famous “Rittenhouse Wassail Punch,” a winter warmer featuring local Apple Cider and Cranberry juice mulled with bourbon and spices. (The recipe is featured on imbibemagazine.com).
Wassail Concerts, held each December, are gourmet dinners combined with a concert by the Rittenhouse Chamber Singers. The group performs throughout the Inn’s dining room and hallways, directed by Innkeeper, Jerry Phillips, and accompanied by local musicians on piano, hammered dulcimer, and percussion. The Wassail Concert is a Wisconsin Christmas tradition dating back to 1975, when Jerry and Mary Phillips, Innkeepers and former music teachers from Madision, WI, created the event after spending their first Christmas in Bayfield. “We were lonely that first year,” says Jerry, “so we decided that the next year we’d form a choir, decorate the Inn, cook a feast, and invite everyone we knew.”

“Where else do you see a concert that takes place all around you?” Jerry leads the choir through the Inn’s three dining areas with seemingly limitless energy and enthusiasm. After more than 300 performances, Jerry is excited as ever. “We can’t wait for the concerts to begin. For us, Wassail is the antidote to the ‘commercial’ Christmas. We look forward to sharing the spirit of the season, a great meal, and some wonderful music. “
