Lace up your hiking boots and get ready to discover the captivating trails along the shoreline of Lake Superior:
Lakeshore Trail
Drive to the Meyers Beach parking area and access the six-mile Lakeshore Trail. This challenging trail offers views of hardwood forests, Lake Superior, and the mainland sea caves. It is best for experienced hikers due to the rugged terrain and steep slopes. Walk the first section of the trail to access the Crevasse, continue down the second section for views of the sea caves, and the third section for forest exploration.
Brownstone Trail
If you are looking for a flat and easy lakefront trail, we recommend the two-mile Brownstone Trail. Follow the Lake Superior shoreline past brownstone cliffs towards the Pike Bay area. Please keep in mind that a section of the trail is closed due to slumping, and donations are being accepted to help with restoration.
Big Bay State Park Trails
Take the ferry to Madeline Island and explore seven miles of hiking trails at Big Bay State Park. Take the 1.5-mile Boardwalk Trail for a leisurely stroll, the 1.3-mile Bay View trail for wildlife watching and views of Big Bay Point, and the 2.6-mile Lagoon Ridges trail for lagoon and wetland views. Stop and pick up a list of bird species seen in the park at the office and enjoy some fantastic bird watching on the trails!
Frog Bay Tribal National Park
Visit Frog Bay Tribal National Park, the first tribal national park in the United States on lands owned and managed by the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. This 175-acre area features three hiking trails offering views of the Apostle Islands, boreal forests, and Frog Bay. Learn about this wilderness’s ecology and cultural importance on several interpretive signs along the way.
