Old Rittenhouse Inn
The Old Rittenhouse Inn is the heart of the property. This is where most of our guest rooms are located, and where you will find The Landmark Restaurant.
History of the Building
The inn is housed in a Queen Anne Victorian home built in 1890 for Allen C. Fuller, an Adjutant General of Illinois during the Civil War. In the original design, the home was painted dark green, and the developer used native Lake Superior brownstone, creamery brick, and shingles during construction. In 1973, the Phillips family purchased the property and opened it as a bed-and-breakfast in 1975. The Phillips family has owned and operated the inn ever since!
Today, the building is more true to its painted lady architecture, and is painted shades of red and cream. The inn features 12 guest rooms and luxury suites, all uniquely designed with vintage decor.
Le Chateau
Le Chateau is another one of our properties, located .4 miles from Old Rittenhouse Inn on Rice Avenue.
History of the Building
Le Chateau was built in 1907 by lumber baron Frank Boutin Jr. in the Queen Anne style, characterized by its sweeping porches, turret, and gable roof. In 1987, the Phillips family purchased the property, completed extensive renovations, and opened it as a sister property to Old Rittenhouse Inn.
Today, Le Chateua has seven guest rooms overlooking Lake Superior. The property also has a beautiful garden area and grounds, featuring a pergola and a fountain garden.
Rittenhouse Cottage
Rittenhouse Cottage is a separate home, located one block from the main building on North 4th Street. This two-story Arts and Crafts cottage features two bedrooms and has space for up to five guests. This is a great option for small families or couples traveling together who want a space just for themselves.
