HISTORICAL NOTES: Le Chateau Boutin

Historic Le Chateau BoutinSituated on ten lots with a spectacular view of Lake Superior's Chequamegon Bay, Le Chateau Boutin is a tribute to the gracious style of living enjoyed by its original owner. This sprawling lakefront home was built in 1908 by Frank Boutin, Jr., whose father had pioneered in the lumbering and fishing industries of early Bayfield. Boutin Jr. lived here only a few years before he moved to Idaho, where he continued in the lumber business.

With its generous, sweeping porches, corner turret, dormer windows and complex gabled roof, the house is an excellent example of the Queen Anne style, which was popular around the turn of the century. Contrasting materials - in this case, sandstone, brick and clapboard - are another hallmark of the style. Even the carriage house, located to the west of the house, was built of clapboard on brick in the Queen Anne style.

Mary and Jerry Phillips purchased the property in April of 1985. Seven guest rooms have been restored as well as the first floor music room, living room and dining room. Each of the guest rooms is furnished with period antiques, has a private bath, and all have woodburning fireplaces. Several include luxury whirlpools. The first floor rooms, each with an original fireplace, are available for reading and conversation.

The Chateau is the ideal location for small to medium sized weddings. With flowers and landscaped grounds, and the newly restored pergola and fountain, you'll find the perfect setting for your special moment.

Another favorite of guests is our Great Mystery Weekends series, held in the Chateau. Seven couples gather for a weekend of great food, laughter and mystery! The house is yours for the weekend!

In addition to overnight guests, Le Chateau is often used for weddings, receptions, family gatherings, retreats and small business meetings. Call Special Events Coordinator Wendy Phillips at (715) 779-5111 for more information.
